Former waiter, founder of multi-billion cooperative in North Luzon - The Tam-an Banaue Multipurpose Cooperative

Cordillera - In the heart of Region 2, North Luzon, lies the Tam-an Banaue Multipurpose Cooperative (TMPC), a once-small venture that has blossomed into a multi-billionaire cooperative. This success story, however, wasn't without its struggles, led by the unwavering determination of Mr. Jose D. Tomas, Sr.

In 1989, Mr. Tomas initiated the Tam-an Hog Raisers’ Association to address a hog disease crisis in the village of Tam-an in Banaue, Ifugao. This initial effort paved the way for the establishment of TMPC, whose roots can be traced back to those humble beginnings. Jose D. Tomas, Sr. served as its General Manager/CEO since inception until his term as Vice Governor of Nueva Vizcaya from 2019 to 2022.

Uniting under a common cause, the group founded the Tam-an Multipurpose Cooperative in 1991, starting with 25 members and minimal assets. Over the years, TMPC's reach expanded across multiple provinces, including Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Aurora, and Ifugao.

Inspired by the idea of volunteerism promoted by Senator Richard Gordon, Mr. Tomas adopted a similar approach for TMPC's expansion. Despite financial constraints, he convinced the board to authorize his endeavors, leading to astonishing results, like meeting a savings quota in just one week.

The cooperative faced trials too. The 2007-2008 economic crisis coupled with unpaid loans pushed TMPC close to bankruptcy. A lifeline arrived in the form of the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCOO), enabling TMPC's revival through innovative lending strategies.

TMPC's accomplishments extended beyond financial prowess. It now manages diverse successful businesses, including a resort, hotel, gasoline stations, technical school, agricultural supply outlets, and more. This resilient journey started with Mr. Tomas, who began as a bellboy and waiter.

TMPC's advocacy for savings has transformed lives, rescuing individuals from loan sharks. The cooperative's accessible financial assistance and efficient service empowered entrepreneurs, while their officers promoted savings habits and cooperative membership.

From modest origins to a thriving enterprise, Tam-an BMPC's saga embodies resilience, innovation, and community spirit. Jose D. Tomas, Sr.'s legacy lives on through TMPC's transformative impact, fostering financial stability and prosperity across North Luzon.

Cordillera - Unbeaten prospect Carl Jammes "Wonder Boy" Martin is gearing up for a pivotal moment in his boxing journey as he readies to face off against Oscar Duge of Tanzania in a compelling 10-round bantamweight clash at Mandaluyong Sports Complex on August 19.

The 24-year-old Igorot boxing star hailing from Lagawe, Ifugao, is emerging from an eight-month hiatus with a keen understanding of the immense significance this fight carries for his future aspirations of becoming a world champion someday.

Martin expressed, "My next fight is incredibly crucial," during Tuesday's Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum held at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

His dedicated training is backed by his father, Abel, and brother, Japeth, who also serve as his trainers, demonstrating their meticulous approach to both preparing for the bout and analyzing potential in-ring adjustments.

Having amassed an impressive record of 21 wins, all of which were punctuated by 17 knockouts (with 10 of them occurring within the first three rounds), the young southpaw pugilist has recuperated fully from a rib injury, positioning himself to give his best in this upcoming showdown.

Former world champion Gerry Penalosa and Sean Gibbons from MP Promotions stand as pillars of support in Martin's corner. If his strategy pans out, Martin envisions the possibility of receiving advanced training in the United States under Gibbons' guidance.

"We're aiming for the first knockout against him," asserted Japeth, who himself has a background in boxing. "But we're also prepared for a prolonged battle."

As fight night approaches, the anticipation builds, and both fighters, Martin and Duge, are set to engage in a clash that could potentially shape the trajectory of their respective boxing careers.

The Wonders Woven in Wire: The Inspiring Story of Lito Malaggay, the Igorot "Barot Man"

Photo Courtesy || Lito Malaggay

Cordillera - In a world where artistry knows no bounds, one man's remarkable journey has unfolded, leaving a trail of inspiration and ingenuity.

Meet Lito Malaggay, fondly known as the "Barot Man" or the "Wire Man," a visionary Igorot artist who has transformed humble wires into extraordinary sculptures, trophies, and a plethora of artistic wonders.

Lito's journey is not just about his artistic prowess but also about his resilience, determination, and unyielding spirit to provide a better life for his family.

Hailing from the picturesque town in Mountain Province, Lito's life took him on a winding path from the uplands to the bustling city of Baguio.

As a young man, he faced the daunting challenges of being a new resident, struggling to make ends meet and sustain his family's needs.

It was amidst these struggles that fate led Lito to his first job as a lineman's assistant during the electrification of barangays in home province.

Little did he know that this role would be the catalyst for his true calling. While supporting more skilled workers and carrying heavy wires, Lito's nimble fingers and innate creativity found their outlet.

He began crafting intricate wire artworks during his free moments, a talent that bloomed amidst the sparks and currents of electrification.

After the electrification project came to a close, Lito found himself at a crossroads. The need to support his growing family compelled him to seek employment at the Easter School Weaving Center.

Here, he embarked on a new journey of learning, honing his skills in tailoring and weaving. He skillfully intertwined native woven patterns into bags, purses, and other items, a true embodiment of Cordilleran heritage.

Yet, destiny had more in store for Lito. A quiet realization dawned upon him that his talents could become a beacon of hope, steering his family away from poverty's grasp.

With courage in his heart, he decided to take the bold step of becoming an entrepreneur, armed with his wire artworks and the determination to succeed.

The road to success was not paved with petals for Lito. Starting without a showroom, he displayed his creations beneath the Abanao Street overpass and the streets of Magsaysay.

Months passed, and the city government's ordinance silenced these public showcases, but Lito's spirit remained undeterred.

He knocked on doors, both figuratively and literally, visiting private and government offices to showcase his works. Rejections and dismissals could not shake his resolve. Slowly but surely, his dedication bore fruit.

Corporate and individual customers began to take notice, recognizing the distinctive charm of his wire artworks. Orders flowed in, especially during special events and occasions, as his creations became sought-after tokens of appreciation.

Malaggay's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the unwavering belief in one's abilities.

He transformed adversity into opportunity, using his talents to weave a brighter future for his family. His journey reminds us that innovation knows no bounds, and true artistry lies in the ability to shape beauty from the simplest of materials.

Wrinkles vanished, blackheads disappeared, and her once-fading colors returned with vibrant life. The result was a breathtaking, youthful beauty that no one could have imagined.

Apo Whang-od, a living legend from Kalinga, is celebrated as the oldest traditional tattooist in the Philippines.

Her expertise lies in the ancient art of 'batok,' a unique hand-tapping technique using lemon tree thorns and charcoal soot.

Her fame reached new heights when she was featured in Vogue magazine, an American fashion and lifestyle publication.
