Cordillera - Team from the Northside Paragliding Philippines lead by the
owner Mr. Aristotel Mendoza has successfully conducted flight test for the
soon to open paragliding activity in Mankayan.
The team launched the paraglider at the Lepanto mine air strip and landed
at the old tailing dam in Proper Paco.
The air strip of Lepanto is a perfect spot for paragliding as it provides a
higher ground for paragliders to launch.
The view from above is incredible, and flyers can enjoy a full scenery of
Mankayan town and the Ilocos Region.
Upon landing, paragliders can also enjoy horseback riding at the
rehabilitated mine tailings dam as an added activity.
The local government of Mankayan has not yet announced the opening of the
paragliding activities in the town as the team is currently undergoing test
flight to ensure that paragliding is really feasible and safe.
Last year, town mayor Frenzel A. Ayong temporarily suspended the launching
of paragliding activities due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in the Lepanto
mine camp.
It can be recalled that paragliding experts had initially stated that
paragliding in the Lepanto air strip is feasible.
Cordillera - In 2013 an Igorot world karate champion joined other karate
masters around the world to train thousands of karate practitioners in
Europe.
The sixth-dan blackbelt of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), three time
world and six time European kata champion, Julian Chees, joined other karate
masters led by 9th Dan Shihan Hideo Ochi, the current chief instructor for
Japan Karate Association Europe and JKA Germany.
Chees, who traces his roots from Maligcong, Bontoc, Mt. Province, had the
privilege to train more than 1,000 young karate practitioners in Germany
together with five highly respected karate masters in Europe.
Chees was among the outstanding students of the late Japanese karate master
Shihan Kunio Sasaki who established the JKA Philippines and his fellow
Cordilleran Edgar Kapawen Sr., chief instructor of JKA PH at the YMCA
Baguio.
Chees is known for his humanitarian efforts in the Philippines. He
has established the Shoshin Kinderhilfe, a foundation that provides
financial assistance to Filipinos in need in the country.
During the aftermath of the super-typhoon Yolanda in 2013, Chees through
his foundation personally distributed over P800,000 worth of rice and cash
to those affected by the typhoon in Dumalag and Tapaz town in
Capiz.
He has also provided cash assistance to his kailyans in the Cordillera
region who were undergoing dialysis treatment and eye operation.
Cordillera - Baguio City Police Officer Director PCol. Allen Rae Co
said that among all the places that he had served, it is Baguio that has the
most disciplined residents.
“Madaling magpatupad ng batas dito dahil mabilis sumunod ang mga tao kaya
bakit naman kakailanganing maging marahas,” he said.
He also explained the important role the police officers in Baguio city to
ensure that residents adhere to the Covid-19 health protocols.
He said that policemen in Baguio City are fair and sensible and are not
callous in implementing laws and health and safety protocols.
“We are reasonable. Naglalakad ka, napagod ka, inalis mo face shield
mo, hindi po kami insensitive para hulihin ka agad,” he said.
However, residents should also do their part by cooperating and obeying the
laws.
“Naglalakad ka nagutom ka, inalis mo mask mo at kumain ka. Siyempre
huhulihin ka kasi you’re putting yourself and other people at risk.
We are doing this tough love for your sake
but we are not inhumane,” he added.
Co said when Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the revitalized implementation
of protocols which include the wearing of face masks and shields, they first
created awareness and exercised leniency and just issued warnings, conducted
lectures and even distributed face shields.

Cordillera - If you think that Igloo house can only be found in Alaska, you're wrong. Igloos can also be found in one of the mountains of Cordillera.
Photo Courtesy || Kate Kareen Pulkera Cabintak
These Igloo-like houses are located in Lap-angan, Mankayan, Benguet. They
weren't built by the Eskimos but built by strong Igorots.
So, if you have been wanting to see an igloo for yourself but can't bear the below zero temperature, you don't need
to fly to Alaska. The Igorots of Cordillera has constructed it for you and
it's only 4-5 hours drive from Baguio.
While the real Igloos in Alaska were built using blocks of snow to form a
spiral dome, the igloos in Benguet were built using cement and concrete
hollow blocks.
At present, there are two igloos which are under construction in
Mankayan.

Office.
BGen. Brawner, who traces his roots to Kiangan, Ifugao is the son of the late and former Baguio and La Trinidad Regional Trial
Court Judge and Commission on Election Commissioner, Justice Romeo Brawner
Sr.
Brawner is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA)
"MAKATAO" Class of 1989.
He finished his elementary and secondary education at the Special Education

Cordillera - In a remarkable display of musical genius, the University of
Baguio (UB) snatched the championship title at the MBC National Choral
Competition held at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City last Dec. 13.
The UB Voices Chorale landed on the top spot in the open category, beating
the biggest names in choral singing. The all-male Koro Ilustrado – dubbed as
the Philippines’ best male choir – came in second.
Another force to reckon with, the Los Cantantes de Manila (former members
of the University of the East Chorale, one of the country’s most
accomplished university choirs), a world champion in Europe (considered the
seat of choir music), settled third.
Meanwhile, the Technological Institute of the Philippines Choral Society, a
gold medalist in the choral contest Sing’n’Joy Manila in 2013, finished as
fourth.
The UB Voices was also named the Best Show Choir during the event.
Dr. Bienvenido Constantino Jr., the group’s conductor and adviser,
mentioned how fierce the competition was, noting, “We went through tough
times and difficulties.”
A qualifying sing-off among over a hundred choirs was held last Sept. 28 in
Cauayan, Isabela, wherein UB took the first place.
At the semi-finals, which followed last Dec. 12, UB still ranked first
among the top 28 that competed.
Finally, during the grand finals, UB picked up the title.
The participants performed three pieces: the contest piece, a novelty
piece, and an elective.
Singer and actress Nanette Inventor graced the awarding ceremonies.
In 2012, UB won second place in the same competition, organized by the
media company Manila Broadcasting Company.

Cordillera - A group of Benguet Division research educators won
the International Outstanding Award during the 8th CAS National and
International Conference (CASNIC) 2020 in Thailand on Nov. 7, 2020.
The research paper of Rachel B. Basalong, Benilda M. Daytaca and Mark Aljon
E. Valenciano entitled “Alternative Teaching and Learning Delivery Modes in
the Schools Division of Benguet, Philippines: A Descriptive Study” earned
prestige during the said conference due to its relevance to the theme
“Higher Education’s Moves and Trends to Combat COVID-19.”
Said study found out that the concerns of the school stakeholders with
reference to alternative teaching and learning delivery modes during
Covid-19 pandemic in the Schools Division of Benguet are encapsulated in
four themes tagged as 4Cs namely: Connectivity, Capability, Condition and
Constitution.
This led the researchers to recommend to the Benguet Schools Division
Office to consider the research results as bases for the division’s policy
framing and Learning Continuity Plan Development in this time of
pandemic.
Basalong, the corresponding author, has received the digital image of their
plaque of award from the CASNIC committee.

First ever Kidney Transplant in Cordillera Success
Cordillera - Team of doctors at a hospital in Benguet has successfully
conducted two kidney transplants in one day.
This is the first kidney transplant procedure that ever took place in
Cordillera region.
Here is a message of Dr. Darwin Henry Galuba (Urulogist), who is the lead
surgeon on the donor side.
Yesterday another milestone.. 2 kidney transplants in one day!! Another
first for the cordillera region! It is an honor to be the lead surgeon on
the donor side.
After the second case I was really exhausted, after the adrenaline drops
from such high level operations you will feel exhausted, but there was an
overwhelming sense of gratitude that covered the exhaustion. Gratitude for
so many things, at that time thanked God for the safe surgery, for gifts
of hand precision and the mind to decide best for patients. It’s just a
long time coming for me,years of waiting that transplant be a reality in
the cordillera region. Would like to thank the people who are instrumental
for this to be a reality, Dr Ed Biteng and Dr Virgie Biteng for showing
true leadership thru action, your support is so palpable it’s simply
inspiring. May God bless you more. Mam Shanna one of the best nurses I’ve
worked with, she is our transplant coordinator and secret weapon. The
efficient and enthusiastic OR Staff of CHDG thank you and of course the KT
TEAM.
the KT TEAM is composed of 2 urologists 3transplant surgeons 2
anesthesiologist & 1 nephrologist .ALL graduates of the NATIONAL
KIDNEY AND TRANSPLANT INSTITUTE. It’s like a mini reunion of a cohesive
team from different batches it’s fun, but in another perspective a KT team
is actually a team of elite highly trained doctors trained and certified
by the only institution in the Philippines (NKTI) assembled together for a
common goal, the real gift of life, kidney transplant..
Thank you to the KT TEAM doctors Feb,Carlos, Jucel, Noli,Jon and of

Cordillera - For those who are waiting for the side B of Roque Belino and
Ingrid Payaket's song collaboration, here it is.
Listen and sing with them as they bring with you Kenny Roger's 'Island in
the Stream'.
Lyrics:
Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown
I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb
I was soft inside, there was somethin' going on
You do something to me that I can't explain
Hold me closer and I feel no pain
Every beat of my heart, we got somethin' goin' on
Tender love is blind, it requires a dedication
All this love we feel, needs no conversation
We ride it together, ah ah
Making love with each other, ah ah
Islands in the stream, that is what we are
No one in between, how can we be wrong
Sail away with me to another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah
I can't live without you if the love was gone
Everything is nothin' if you got no one
And you did walk in tonight
Slowly loosen' sight of the real thing
But that won't happen to us and we got no doubt
Too deep in love and we got no way out
And the message is clear
This could be the year for the real thing
No more will you cry, baby, I will hurt you never
We start and end as one, in love forever
We can ride it together, ah ah
Makin' love with each other, ah ah
Islands in the stream, that is what we are
No one in between, how can we be wrong
Sail away with me to another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah
Sail away
Ooh, sail away with me
Islands in the stream, that is what we are
No one in between, how can we be wrong
Sail away with me to another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah
Islands in the stream, that is what we are
No one in between, how can we be wrong
Sail away with me to another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah
Islands in the stream, that is what we are
No one in between, how can we be wrong

Cordillera - A living museum in Silang Cavite called Shambala features a
place where you can experience a bit of Cordilleran culture.
Shambala is Sanskrit word named after mythical Himalayan kingdom
which means a "place of peace and happiness".
The Shambala in Cavite mimics the Cordilleran scenery as it features a
serene surrounding of authentic and indigenous Cordilleran artifacts like
the carve stones, bul-ul and the Ifugao huts.
Riza Matibag-Muyot, the owner of Shambala said the place is like a living
museum that shows the rich culture of Cordillera especially the Ifugao and
Sagada.
The huts are authentic as it was originally brought from Banga-an, Mayoyao,
Sagada and Bontoc.
The huts are equipped with fixtures made from indigenous materials but with
modern and comfortable amenities that will soothe aching nerves and
backs.
There is a green house for business functions and large gatherings and
there is tribal DAP-AY where a small group can light a bon-fire at night and
roast sticks of barbeque or hotdogs under a cloak of stars and
moonlight.
