Cordilleran beauty showcases traditional Igorot weaving in National Costume Presentation in Vigan

Update: Baguio bet Miss Ghenesis Latugat proudly showcased traditional Cordillera weaving in the MUP National Costume Presentation in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The Miss Universe Philippines National Costume Presentation features the Philippine textile industry which is an integral part of our uniquely beautiful history.

The theme for this year’s National Costume presentation is HABI or weaving which represents the rich stories and craftsmanship of different tribes and communities throughout the archipelago. 

It is part of the fabric of our national identity. 

Miss Latugat will be competing in the coronation night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on April 30, 2022.

Cordillera - Miss Universe Philippines candidate Ghenesis Paddilla-Dalayday Latugat from Baguio City and Kalinga has earned the top spot in the beauty pageant's Fashion and Runway Challenge. 

The Miss Universe Philippine official Facebook page has posted the top three candidates who were the winners in the challenge last Friday, March 24.

Cebu's Chantal Elise Legaspi Schmidt and Palawan's Angelica Lopez also made it to the challenge's top three, alongside Ghenesis.

"Here are the winners of our #MUPH2022FashionAndRunwayChallenge with BRAGAIS SHOES and ARTE Partylist! Congratulations, ladies!" MUPH posted.

Winner in the challenge were chosen based on the submitted votes from the public as well from the beauty pageant's official judges.

Igorot Physicist receives Distinguished Student Award by the American Physics Group APS-FIP

Cordillera - Mr. Jansen Keith L. Domoguen, a proud Cordilleran from Barlig and Sagada, Mt. Province has received award from the American Physical Society Forum on International Physics (APS - FIP DS3 Award).

In 2015, Mr. Domoguen, a 4th year student of Ateno de Manila University, BS Applied Physics with Materials Science Engineering was given the 2015 Distinguished Student Award, making him one of the 12 non-US students of physics to be awarded the title. 

Domoguen presented his research during the Annual APS Meeting, along with 1,000 papers on physics by eminent scientists in the field of physics, including astrophysics, nuclear physics, particles and fields physics, the physics of beams, and computational physics.

The young physicist of Cordillera was granted 2,500 US dollar to attend the awarding ceremonies at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

The APS-FIP is an association for phycisits who are interested and passionate in the advancement of physics and fostering collaborations around the world.

University of Baguio is Top Performing School in March 2022 MedTech Licensure Exam


Cordillera - The University of Baguio (UB) has ranked number 1 in the March 2022 MedTech Licensure Examination. 

UB acquired a total rating of 82.18 percent making it as the Top Performing School nationwide. 

Meanwhile, Christian Jake Empiso Palque, a graduate of the Saint Louis University (SLU) ranked in top 3 garnering a score of 88. 40 percent.

Also a graduate of SLU, Mira Kristal Cardenas Reinido ranked 9th with a score of 86.40 percent. 

Audrey Nicole Dumlao from the Far Eastern University - Manila campus is the top 1 among the 1,268 who passed the exam.

According to The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), there are a total of  1,268 out of 2,752 who passed the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination given by the Board of Medical Technology.

The exam was administered in different cities of the country including Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Koronadal, Legazpi, Lucena, Pampanga, Rosales, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.

Two UBians are TOPNOTCHERS in January 2022 Dentist Licensure Examination

Cordillera - Two graduates of the University of Baguio (UB) are among the topnotchers in the January 2022 Dentist Licensure Examination held in different testing centers in the country. 

Dr. Maria Salvacion Dacio landed in Top 2 with a rating of 83.03 percent while Dr. Shaira Cataliona Cabalonga is in Top 10 with a rating of 81.67 percent. 

UB's School of Dentistry congratules Dr. Dacio and Dr. Cabalonga for representing their alma mater. 

"We are happy to announce that we have students who are part of the Top 10 in the March 2022 Dentistry Licensure Examination. We are very proud of you for representing your alma mater to your highest ability." UB's official Facebook page posted. 

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 731 out of 1,660 passed the January 2022 Dentist Licensure Examination given by the Board of Dentistry in Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Iloilo last January 2022.

Two Cordillerans promoted to One-Star General of the PNP

Cordillera - Two proud Cordilleran cops were promoted to the rank of Police Brigadier General of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

PB/Gen. Andrew D. Cayad and PB/Gen. David K. Peredo were promoted to the rank of Police Brigadier General on March 16, and 17, 2022 in Camp Crame.

The two new generals are among the 23 cops who were promoted to star-rank generals following the recommendation from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). 

PB/Gen. Cayad, the Executive Officer of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence is a member of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) class of 1994. 

Meanwhile, PB/Gen Peredo is a member of the PNPA Class of 1992.

PNP Chief Gen. Carlos led the oath-taking and donning of ranks of newly-promoted Police Colonels,

He congratulated the newly-promoted police officials whom he said fully deserve their new ranks. Gen. Carlos emphasized that service reputation will always play a major factor in the promotion of PNP officers.

“There is no way to go but up. We assure everybody that we will continue processing the promotion papers of qualified police officers and men owing to their contributions to the government,” Gen. Carlos said.

Artworks of Cordilleran artist featured in World Art Expo 2022 in Indiana, USA

Cordilleran - Cordilleran visual artist, Jinkee Molina-Sangoy was lucky enough to have her artworks featured in the World Art Expo 2022 in Indiana, USA. 

Sangoy is an artist from the Tingguin tribe in Abra, whose artworks made it internationally, thanks to her  customer who discovered her artwork and invited her to represent the Philippines in the Expo. 

"...dahil po sa determinasion ko, at pagsusumikap ko sa aking art, ay nadiscover po ako ng isang kaibigan na artist din sa Indiana, USA, nagustuhan niya yung mga artworks ko, actually naging customer ko siya, she's from Negros Occidental...," Sangoy said in a TV interview.

Asked how she became interested in arts, Sangoy shared that she started doing arts since he was 7 years old.

Knowing she has talents in art, she studies fine arts at the University of Northern Luzon - Vigan campus to enhance her knowledge in the fields of arts.

Sangoy uses watercolor, acrylic and mixed as her preferred mediums and got her inspiration from the work of famous painter Van Gogh and Monet.

She participated in many different art exhibitions both nationally and internationally  including the Art Trade Show in Vigan City, and Abra's Artist Festival. 

In 2019 her artworks was featured in a European art magazine and became a member of the Art Association of the Philippines. 

She also spread her art in the international galleries such as the Amazing Artwork International Multimedia, London's Art Eye, Universal Gallery, and Artists of the World United by Art and many more.

LOOK: Baguio's Children Park Soon to Open

Cordillera - The city government of Baguio City has announced the opening of the children's park in the near future with new playing facilities that are safer for kids to play. 

The park was closed two years ago for rehabilitation and putting up of modern playgrounds with recreational facilities like playscapes with slides, playhouses, ladders, jungles that aims to develop children's physical coordination, strength and flexibility.

The old play structures in the park were mostly old and decorated with multiple coatings which was discovered to contain unsafe substances by the EcoWaste Coalition.

Unbeaten Igorot fighter signs with international promotion Probellum

Cordillera - The fighting pride of Cordillera and the Philippines, the unbeaten Carl "The Wonderboy Boy" Martin recently signed with the international promotion Probellum, joining "The Filipino Flash" Donaire and Donnie Nietes.

Probellum is a company that promotes boxing globally under its current president Richard Schaefer. 

For Martin, this is the beginning of his transition to international boxing scene following the path of Donaire and Pacquiao.

“For the last two or three years, my team and I have been carefully studying all possible options and situations that will lay the groundwork for my international boxing success,” said Carl Jammes Martin.

“Our patience has paid off and joining Probellum has been worth the wait. While the company itself is only a few months old, the team behind it are second to none from a boxing and business point of view.

WATCH: Ifugao fighter Martin knocks out Baldonado, now the new WBA Asia Super Bantamweight Champion

Cordillera - Undefeated Cordilleran fighter from Ifugao, Carl James Martin stops Baldonado in the 11th round to remain as the PH super bantamweight champion and capture the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia super bantamweight belt during their match up fight at the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque on March 12, 2022.

Although he got knockdown in the 2nd round by Baldonado, the Cordilleran fighter showed strong stamina and resilience to bounce back. 

Martin in the later rounds unloaded powerful combos and body shots to the already gassed out Baldonado. 

The referee stopped the fight to prevent further damage to Baldonado at 2:02 left in the 11th round.

Martin maintains his undefeated record of 19 wins with 16 coming by way of TKO.

Igorot from Benguet heads Bureau of Customs' Intelligence and Investigation Service


Cordillera - Proud Igorot from Atok and La Trinidad, Benguet, Dir. Jeoffrey C. Tacio is the current head of the Intelligence and Investigation Service (CISS) of the Bureau of Customs. 

Recently, Dir. Tacio department  was awarded for his exemplary performance in border protection-related operations as head of the CIIS during the 120th founding anniversary celebration of the agency.

Under his leadership as CIIS director, Tacio led the successful execution of the strengthened anti-smuggling and anti-corruption operations of BOC that resulted in the seizure of P28.4 billion worth of imported goods and contraband.

His agency also filed 100 criminal cases against those involved in smuggling, including the filing of 63 administrative charges against BOC employees, brokers, and importers

Prior to his current role, Dir. Tacio served as the Regional Director of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency- RO1 where he greatly contributed in the Peace and Order of the Ilocandia Region.

DIRECTOR TACIO had been aggressive in the anti-drug advocacy as evidenced by his track record in public service when he steered PDEA RO1 in becoming the Best PDEA Regional Office for the CY 2014. He has always made sure that the grassroots get involved into making this place a drug- free one. 

His agency also filed 100 criminal cases against those involved in smuggling, including the filing of 63 administrative charges against BOC employees, brokers, and importers.

Dir Tacio works round the clock, sacrificing weekends with families in the exigency of service. DIR TACIO together with his men and women is tripling anti- drug efforts in adherence to the President Rodrigo Duterte’s Marching Order: Drug problem has to be stopped by all means that the law allows… the fight will be relentless and it will be sustained. This is evidenced by the Office’s Operational Accomplishment. 

DIR TACIO’s role in maintaining the peace and order of Ilocandia Region has been proven vital time and again especially concerning the war against illegal drugs. By personally conducting lectures, he has influenced more people, young & old to the great dangers of using illegal drugs. His men and women behind him were inclined to be more adaptive in the performance of their duties thus, making them a versatile unit of the whole agency.

Igorot actor Jeyrick "Carrot Man" Sigmaton is Film Ambassador 2022


Cordillera - After winning the Best Actor Award during the International Film Festival Manhattan NYC for the Cordilleran Short Film "Dayas" Produced and Directed by Direk Jianlin Floresca. Jeyrick will be joined by the Big Stars of Philippine Cinema for the Film Ambassadors’ Night 2021.

Other Honorees in the said event are: John Arcilla as part of the category "A-Listers", Snooky Serna and Janine Gutierrez | Actor Honorees, Janice De Belen and Carrot Man for | Short Film Actor Honorees and a Special Citation of Vice Ganda.

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will be holding its onsite event on February 27 with an intimate gathering exclusive to this year’s honorees at the MET Theater, the cultural gem of Manila which recently celebrated its 90th anniversary—a fitting home for this very important event.

Igorota from Ifugao appointed Assistant Secretary of Department of Social Welfare and Development

Cordillera - A proud Igorot woman who hails from the province of Ifugao, Janet P. Armas was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

After serving for 32 years as an employee of the DSWD, Asec. Armas is grateful for her new appointment as Assistant Secretary. 

Prior to her appointment, Asec Armas served as Officer-In-Charge Regional Director of DSWD-CAR Field Office for five years before becoming the National Manager of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services - National Community Driven Development Program (Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP).

Asec. Armas proved that nothing is impossible for a woman who dreamed, strived and worked hard.

In her message in line with  Women's Month celebration, Armas said determination and believing is the key in chasing and claiming a dream and in becoming an advocate to women.

"If you pursue, believe, and make way to improve your life and  if you claim it, and  in any way,  you can become an advocate for women's right. This is one  a way to help your fellow women," she said.

Baguio's Smoke-Free Program Wins International Award From The World Health Organization

Cordillera - The summer capital of the Philippine bagged an international award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its smoke-free programs.

The City received the Healthy Cities Award from WHO under the category of "Sharing Clean Air: Committed to multispectral implementation of smoke-free laws. 

According the the Public Information Office - Baguio, the city was cited for the best practices and innovations it adopted and implemented in the community to promote and protect the health of its urban population amid the challenges of the pandemic.

The awards program by the AFHC WHO-Western Pacific Region Office has been done since 2004 and every two years thereafter “to encourage cities in the Western Pacific Region to continue to innovate and demonstrate effective and efficient ways of promoting health and urban populations.”  

The city’s smoke-free advocacy is anchored on Ordinance No. 34 -2017 or Smoke-Free Ordinance which prohibits the use, sale, distribution and advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products with corresponding penalties imposed.

LGU Baguio had done a tremendous job in implementing the ordinance like the continuous information-education-communication (IEC) campaign to educate the residents; conduct of regular compliance monitoring of residents and establishments in the barangays;  provision of assistance to smokers willing to quit under smoke cessation program; and training of enforcers in the barangays level to augment manpower implementing the ordinance.

Benguet cited among Most Competitive Province nationwide


Cordillera - The province of Benguet was recognized as the 10th Most Competitive Province in 2020 according to a report released by DTI-CAR during the 7th and 8th Annual Regional Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) Recognition Ceremony held on February 17, 2022.

The province was also cited the 10th Most Improved Province in the entire country. 

The Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) is an annual ranking of cities and municipalities nationwide to measures how competitive the cities and municipalities are and ranks them based on the list of competitiveness indicators on the four pillars of economic dynamism, government efficiency, infrastructure, and resiliency geared towards sustainable competitiveness. 

Meanwhile, DTI Undersecretary Bles Lantayona   congratulated the Cordillera region for continuously and actively participating in the CMCI.

 "In the Cordillera Administrative Region, I am proud that our very own DTI - CAR has been proactive in encouraging the cities and municipalities in the region to join the annual ranking, to gain you insights on the best practices of other participants as well as to share their own innovations and best practices for the reference of others," she said.

Igorot General Gerald Bantag - The First 4-STAR GENERAL from the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA)


Cordillera - The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) conducted Testimonial Parade and Review to BuCor Chief Gerald Bantag at the Camp General Mariano N. Castañeda in Silang, Cavite on March 3, 2022. 

The academy honored General Bantag for being the first 4-Star General who came from the PNPA. 

Gen. Bantag who is from the Cordillera region is the current Director General of the Bureau of Corrections under the appointment of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte handpicked Gen. Bantag as Director of the bureau because of his vast experience in BJMP.

“But in the meantime, gusto ko siya kasi nagtatapon ng granada daw. Gusto ko ngang magkuha ng santo wala naman, ganun rin. Magkuha ng military, wala. Dito ka sa talagang may experience sa BJMP (In the meantime, I want him in because I heard, he throws grenade. I was looking for a saint but I couldn’t find anyone. I searched the military but none [qualified]. So (I) picked the one with experience in BJMP).

On August 11, 2016, an explosion happened inside an office at the Paranaque City jail when Bantag was then the jail warden. The explosion killed 10 Chinese detainees who had been charged with drug trafficking.

In his 4-year term as BuCor Chief, Bantag has implemented major improvement of the penitentiary which includes the demolition of the makeshift quarter of inmates in the New Bilibid Prison (NPB) and the reduction of drugs being produced in the NPB.

Igorota pilot from Benguet is First Female Chief Pilot of Asia

Cordillera - Igorota pilot Capt. Amorelle Martinez is a proud Cordilleran who hails from Bokod, Benguet. She is the first female Chief Pilot in Asia. 

Capt. Martinez was a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Management and Military Officer Rank.

She also took formal pilot training at the Philippine Air Force Flying School, where she held key positions before retiring as the Director for Operations in 2008.  

She served the Armed Forces of the Philippines  (AFP) as military pilot before joining the PAL Express where she worked as the Chief Pilot.

At the PAF, she flew the CESSNA, the SF 260 MP and the NOMAD 22.

In 2017, Capt. Martinez received the STAR Award of the PAL group for being the captain of Airbus A320/321 Captain in logging a total of 9,678 flying hours.

Igorot from Benguet Is Top 1 on Scout Ranger Course Class 214- 2021


Cordillera - A proud Ibaloi Army Officer was awarded with Black Panther Award  and a Letter of Commendation from First Scout Ranger Regiment, Philippine Army for graduating as number 1 from Scout Ranger Course.

2LT Jerson P Balagot obtained an average of 90.36% graduating as number 1 on his class among 219 students who joined the Scout Ranger Course (SRC) Class 214- 2021. 

2LT BALAGOT received the momento and letter of commendation last February 24, 2022 during the closing ceremony held at Camp Pablo Tecson, San Miguel, Bulacan.

Be it known that 2LT BALAGOT is a graduate of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “MABALASIK” class of 2019 and Basic Airborne Course (BAC) Class 124- 19. 


Scout Rangers, known officially as the First Scout Ranger Regiment, is a Philippine Army unit specializing in anti-guerrilla jungle warfare, raids, ambushes, close quarters combat, urban warfare and sabotage. 

The First Scout Ranger Regiment was formed on November 25, 1950 under the command of former AFP Vice Chief of Staff and Defense Secretary Rafael M. Ileto. The unit was modelled after two legendary fighting groups, the intelligence gathering American Alamo Scouts and the combat ready US Army Rangers, the unit was created due to a growing need to counter the Hukbalahap guerrillas and its rebellion with a force trained in small unit actions. The Scout Rangers participated in the December 1989 coup attempt against the administration of Corazon Aquino. Led by then Captain Danilo Lim, Major Abraham Purugganan and Lieutenant Colonel Rafael Galvez, some 2500 Rangers took over Makati in the most destructive coup attempt against the Aquino administration, which left hundreds of civilians and soldiers dead, and hundreds more injured.

The Scout Rangers played a major role in capturing the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebel camp during the 2000 all-out war against the MILF. During the Battle of Marawi of 2017, Scout Rangers were the first elite units deployed with the 1st Infantry Division to neutralize the Islamic State-inspired groups the Maute and Abu Sayyaf and their leaders Isnilon Hapilon and the Maute brothers. During the battle the Rangers incurred many casualties including a veteran Captain of the battle of Zamboanga city. A Scout Ranger is credited with killing Hapilon during the final stages of battle.

Cordilleran general from Abra appointed PNP's Deputy Chief for Administration


Cordillera - A full-blooded Cordilleran from Abra has assumed the 2nd top post in the Philippine National Police hierarchy.

Police Lieutenant General Israel Ephraim Dickson, who is from the Tingguian tribe of Abra, has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief for Administration.

Prior to his appointment in the PNP's top office, Lt/Gen Dickson served as the head of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Northern Luzon and also in Visayas before he was appointed as head of the PNP Civil Security Group.

General Dickson  also served his own region in 2019 as the director of Police Regional Office (PRO) Cordillera.

During his stint as PRO-COR Director, Cordillera PNP was recognized as the Most Disciplined Cops in the entire country.

Gen. Dickson was also among the top officials who handled the case of PMA Cadet 4th Class Dormitorio, who died of hazing inside PMA campus.

Dickson belongs to the  PMA class of 1987.

Cordilleran General Romeo Brawner Jr. receives Outstanding Achievement Award

Cordillera - Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., is among the nine Cavaliers who received this year's Outstanding Achievement Award during the 2022 PMA Alumni Homecoming at Fort Gregorio H. del Pilar, Baguio City on February 18, 2022.

The PMA Alumni Association Inc. recognized Lt. Gen. Brawner, who belongs to PMA "Makatao" Class of 1989, for his appointment as the 65th Commanding General of the Philippine Army on December 10, 2021.

BGen. Brawner, who traces his roots to Kiangan, Ifugao is the son of the late and former Baguio and La Trinidad Regional Trial Court Judge and Commission on Election Commissioner, Justice Romeo Brawner Sr.

In 2013, he was awarded as one of the country's Most Outstanding Filipino soldier.

Igorot police officer graduates as Top 1 of the Public Safety Basic Recruit Course

Cordillera - A proud Igorot PROCOR NUP graduate from Kibungan, Benguet tops the Public Safety Basic Recruit Course (PSBRC) at the National Training Institute.

Patrolman Rhem Austeen Labi Danio bested other trainees of  the PSBRC Batch 2021-01 "SINAGDIRAYAN".

Danio is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing and finished Master in Community Health Development at the Benguet State University. 

He also finished Master of Arts in Psychology and Master of Arts in Special Education at the University of the Cordilleras and also Bachelor of Forensic Science at the University of Baguio.

Danio first entered PNP service as a Crime Registrar of Baguio City Police Office - Station 2 in October 2014, according to PCADG Cordillera. 

As an NUP back then, he has exemplified competence, hard work and dedication in the performance of his duties and responsibilities. 

He was the Best NUP of the Police Service Anniversary at the City Level in 2020 and Regional Level in 2021. He was also the Outstanding PCAD NUP of the 126th PCR Month Celebration.

Danio and 627 police officers from different units and from different regions took the PSBRC at the National Headquarters/National Support Units Training Center at Camp Vicente P. Lim, Mayapa Calamba City Laguna.
