Cong. Eric Yap to summon DepEd officials over inaccuracy in learning materials

Photo Courtesy || Cong. Eric Yap

Cordillera - Benguet Legislative Representative Congressman Eric Yap has called on the Department of Education to conduct massive review of some of the modules containing discriminatory remarks about the Igorots.

Yap said he will file a House Resolution in Congress and summons DepEd officials to explain the inaccuracy and sign of incompetency in the learning modules of students.

Here is the full message of Congressman Eric Yap:

I strongly condemn these photos circulating online. It is unbelievable that these made its way to the learning modules of our students. Nakakagalit. Nakakadismaya. It is not clear whether it forms part of a textbook, a module or a test sheet, but regardless of its form and context, this is an insult, an obvious form of discrimination and a mockery of our rich culture in the Cordillera.

What message are we sending our students reading these? Okay lang na ma-bully ang bata dahil sa kanyang anyo? Okay lang ma-discriminate dahil sa kasuotan? Sa murang edad ng mga estudyante, ito ang ituturo natin? If we do not act on this, the day will come that our heritage and culture in Cordillera will die a natural death because it will be perceived as something that should be ashamed of. We will not allow that to happen.

I call on the Department of Education to undertake a massive review of its textbooks and other materials used in schools. I urge Secretary Briones to issue a Department Order instructing teachers nationwide to forbid them from using discriminatory statements such as those shown in photos in preparing their modules. This is not the first time that this happened and at this point, the Department should take responsibility. The buck stops with you.

This is an issue that we will definitely raise in Congress through a House Resolution that I will file and we will summon DEPED officials to shed light on this matter. Not only for this incident, but for every inaccuracy and sign of incompetence in our learning materials.

Cong. Eric Yap submits House Bill No. 7011 to give free insurance to Cordilleran farmers

Cordillera- Farmers will no longer worry in the near future if they are at a big loss or if their  crops got destroyed due to natural calamities if the House Bill No. 7011 gets approved.
Congressman Eric Go Yap has seen the plight of Cordilleran farmers in times of calamities and have shown great concern by finding a better way to help all farmers including their farms.

The Congressman  submitted the House Bill No. 7011 that aims to give free weather index-based agricultural insurance to all farmers.

This House Bill, once approved, will insure all farmers to receive financial assistance from the government if their crops were destroyed by extreme changes in weather conditions or natural calamities.

As the Cordillera region is prone to such calamities, Yap has considered all farmers  through this bill he recently submitted.

Through the said insurance, farmers will be able to easily recover from their financial losses brought by natural calamities like typhoons. This kind of insurance provided by the government will save farmers from big troubles or from developing anxiety due to their losses.

Farmers have been overlooked for a long time not realizing that they play a great role in keeping the country afloat because they feed the entire nation. Without these farmers, there will be food shortage and people will go hungry or worse starve to death.
Indeed, farming is not an easy job, yet farmers still choose to do the hard work for everyone's benefit.

It's about time  farmers' integrity be uplifted, their hardships and sacrifices acknowledged  and their source of income be fully supported  by the government in any way it can. After all,  these farmers are the ones who feed us all.

Cordillera - Appointed Benguet Caretaker Anti-Crime and Terrorism Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS) Party List Congressman Eric Go Yap passed House Bill No. 6171 on Wednesday.

The bill aims to restore the management of the Benguet General Hospital (BeGH) to the national government and increases the current bed capacity of the hospital from 200 to 400.

Cong. Yap said returning the management of BeGH to the national government would ensure bigger and continues funds for the hospital and not just rely on the funds of the provincial government and the hospital's own fund.

Yap added that re-nationalizing of the hospital will increase the salary of the staff like nurses. He said that nurses should be receiving salary grade SG 15 (Php32,000) and not SG 9 (Php17,975)

"Upang makatiyak tayo na malaki at tuloy-tuloy and pondong mailalaan para sa hospital at hindi lang basta aasa sa pondo ng Provincial Government at sariling kita ng ospital," Cong. Yap said in a statement.

He added that turning the hospital to the government will benefit those who need medical help due to the level of health service provided by the government.

"Dahil dito, lubos na makikinabang ang mga nangangailangan ng tulong medical dahil maitataas ang antas ng health service delivery ng hospital," he said.

House Bill No. 6171 is the first bill Cong. Yap had passed since assuming post as an appointed caretaker of Benguet.

On January 29, Cong. Yap was welcomed by Benguet officials and employees during his visit to the province.
