Cordillera - Pauline Samantha Sagayo, a fourth year law student of the University of the Philippines-College of Law is one among a five member team who emerged champion in the prestigious 2024 Philip C. Jessup moot court competition held at Hyatt Regency Hotel, Washington DC.
Pauline is the daughter of Atty Paul P. Sagayo Jr who traces his roots from Bangaan, Sagada Mountain Province and Besao, Mountain Province. Her mother Judge Ma.Snooky Barreno-Sagayo is with the Regional Trial Court of Valenzuela City.
The UP Law 2024 Jessup Team is composed of Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes, and Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal who demonstrated unwavering dedication and brilliance under the guidance of Professor Marianne Vitug as coach and Professor Rommel Casis as faculty advisor.
The UP College of Law bested 600 teams worldwide including Harvard and Oxford in this competitive debate.
Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from roughly 700 law schools in 100 countries and jurisdictions. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is an advocacy competition for law students. Teams of law students compete against one another through the presentation of oral and written pleadings to address timely issues of public international law in the context of a hypothetical legal dispute between nations.
