Cordillera - A new species of orchid endemic to the Philippines was accidentally discovered on a mountain in Bokod, Benguet.

25-year old Maverick Tamayo, a botanist from the University of the Philippines and his team discovered the rare species of orchid when they are doing a reconnaissance fieldwork on Mt. Komkompol in the town of Bokod.

According to Tamayo, he was checking for plants that attach themselves to tree trunks when he noticed a very small orchid blooming among the greenery of the mossy forest.

He carefully checked the lip or labellum of the flower and he found out that it is distinct from all known species.

“I carefully checked on the details of the flower of this orchid, and immediately, to my surprise, the morphology of the flower appears a little special," Tamayo said via Esquiremag.

So he brought some specimen of the orchid to UP-Baguio for further studies.

The laboratory test confirmed that it was indeed a new species of orchid that is endemic in the country.

They named the orchid Dendrochilum ignisiflorum or Fire Flower because that orchid is slightly spreading, yellow to deep-orange flower which resembles fire.
