Cordillera - Marlon Tallayo, an OFW dental technologist, painlessly annihilated 44 Cordilleran woodpushers to easily pocket the gold medal in the recently concluded 3rd Highland Online Chess Tournament on July 17.
"I did not expect a run away with full one point ahead towards the last round. All I needed was a draw to secure the championship," chatted Tallayo, a native of Besao, Mt. Province and a former University of Baguio varsity player from 1994 to 1998.
Despite his frantic activities as a dental technologist at a government company in Qatar, he joined the competition as a leisure and to compete with young but topgun chess players.
Meanwhile, UB varsity player Marc Francis Balanay of Apayao secured the second spot, thereby leaving the third place to FEU varsity player Bea Mendoza of Baguio City.
Said online competition employed seven rounds Swiss systems format with five minutes and two seconds increment via Lichess Application.
With the aim of making Cordillera chess players active in tournaments despite pandemic, Jeff Barry and Carlos K. Mama-o, Jr. organized the event through the sponsorship of Ruben Ternola.
