A Bold Journey
Arlyn’s path to the USCGA began with her studies at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy. When the Philippine Coast Guard opened applications for a chance to train at the USCGA in 2021-2022, Arlyn seized the opportunity, despite knowing little about the Academy at the time. Now, she reflects on her decision with gratitude, saying, “I have zero regrets!”
A Taste of Home
Though thriving in her new environment, Arlyn admits to missing her family and the unique flavors of the Philippines. “My sister’s sinigang — a sour and savory stew — is my favorite. She’s going to be so proud when she reads this!” she said with a smile.
Cultural Insights
Living in the U.S. has brought its own surprises, including adapting to the imperial measurement system. “I find myself constantly converting measurements in my head to make sense of them!” she joked.
Despite the adjustments, Arlyn embraces her role as a cultural ambassador, sharing stories of the Philippines’ diverse geography, dialects, and traditions. “Every province in the Philippines has its own distinct culture, and there’s always something exciting to discover,” she explained.
Life at the Academy
For Arlyn, the highlight of her USCGA experience is the people. “The friendships and sense of community have made a big impact on me,” she shared.
As she looks to the future, Arlyn is excited about a post-graduation family trip, where she hopes to deepen connections with her loved ones and showcase her homeland.
Words of Wisdom
For international cadets starting their journeys, Arlyn offers practical advice: “Make a bucket list of things to do and see in the United States! There’s so much to experience, and it’s a great way to make the most of your time abroad.”
Arlyn’s inspiring journey exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and pride in her heritage, making her a role model for cadets worldwide.
