Cordillera - Dr. Alexander Abad, a brilliant mind in the field of Computer Science and Informatics, has made history by securing the second position in the prestigious Queen Mary UK Best PhD in Robotics Award.
Dr. Abad is the first Filipino student to secure a position among the top three spot in the competition's history.
His study, "Fine-grained Haptics: Sensing and Actuating Haptic Primary Colors", explores the development of a revolutionary sensor that could be used in telemedicine and telerobotics.
The sensor he studied has the potential to transform the way humans interact with robots and technology which can present a new possibilities in the field of health and beyond.
Dr. Abad's journey was guided by the expertise of Dr. Anuradha Ranasinghe from the School of Maths, Computer Science, and Engineering, with invaluable support from De La Salle University in Manila, where he currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering.
Reflecting on his remarkable success, Dr. Abad urged aspiring inventors to dream big and passionately pursue their ambitions.
He shared, "Mangarap tayo! Hindi iyan kaya ng mga hayop o ng mga robot kahit pa ng mga advanced AI! We need to dream big and do our best to fulfill that dream! Noong elementary pa lang ako ay gusto ko na maging scientist gaya nina Newton, Edison, at Einstein. Pangarap ko makagawa ng munting bagay na makakatulong sa tao. Mag-aral tayo maigi at magsumikap para matupad ang ating mga pangarap."
The Queen Mary UK Best PhD in Robotics Award is sponsored by the Center for Advanced Robotics at Queen Mary, University of London. This prestigious competition is open to students enrolled in robotics doctoral programs in universities across the United Kingdom. The submitted research undergoes a rigorous evaluation process by a panel of renowned international experts in the field of robotics.
