Cordillera - Cordillera police will be donating 500 pesos from their payroll to accumulate funds for the construction of a footbridge in Sadanga, Mt. Province.

Police Regional Office Cordillera Director PBGen. R'win Pagkalinawan said during the second Cordillera Regional Law Enforcement Coordinating Council meeting that the 7,000 strong police in the region will be donating P500 from their payroll.

PBGen Pagkalinawan added that the donation is a gesture of gratitude to Mayor Ganggangan for his peace and order programs in the municipality and his efforts to fight insurgency in the area, according to PIA.
Mayor Ganggangan has been calling Cordillerans especially those in the government to make a stand on the issue of insurgency.

He said that this is the time to address the insurgency problem in the region as he lamented that relatives would be caught in the fighting between leftist groups and the government forces.

"Let us not pretend as if there is no problem in the Cordillera. There is an ongoing war - the legitimate government force versus the New People's Army - and to me it's a senseless killing," Ganggangan said.

Cordillera- Growing up in the mountains of Cordillera, everyone must have spotted an organic mushroom of any kind or "oong and boo" as the locals call them.  It's been part of every locals' childhood collecting mushrooms and learning to identify what's edible and what's not.
During rainy season, the Cordilleran mountains are blessed with abundant organic mushrooms apart from edible wild plants and fruit-bearing trees. Elders call them the 'manna' from heaven relating it from the manna received by the Israelites in the Bible times.

A 10-year old, Jessie Almoza, however had taken these gifts of nature gratefully and wisely as he was seen selling bags of  'boo' to  motorists. Most of his costumers are also locals who are familiar with organic mushrooms and their health benefits.

Young Jessie's entrepreneur skills at an early age and his determination to do something worthwhile was commended and received  tons of positive comments from netizens and those from the offline community.

Some children at this stage are still discovering what's worth their time and effort, but Jessie had already found his.

"Maganda naman....., na meron silang ginagawa habang wala silang pasok. Dati rati pag ganitong season, merong ganyan na binebenta dito," Ryan, the first buyer said in an interview with TVPatrolNorthLuzon.

Unfortunately, his sales had been affected by the community lock down in his town due to the current pandemic.

The grade four pupil from Itogon Benguet, Jessie, had been saving his profits in a plastic bottle for his school needs.
"Gagamitin ko para makaipon ng pera para pambili ng gamit ko sa school," Jessie said in the same interview.

Jessie's parents don't have have  a stable job and his father is a stroke patient. Hence, his determination to save up for his education and help his family.

His mother and sister have to climb the mountains as early as six in the morning to search and collect mushrooms for Jessie to sell. This is their main source of living.

As for Jessie and his family, they receive the gift of nature wisely and  honor the gift of life with a grateful heart as they live within their means and strive hard to survive despite the world's current battle with Covid-19.

Indeed, blessings come in any form, in any kind and in any circumstance. We are blessed more than we know. The only difference is how we recognize and acknowledge such blessings.

How have you been blessed? Do you mind sharing them with us?

Teachers in Mt. Province walk kilometres to get Wi-Fi signal to attend webinar

Photo Courtesy || Julita Gumatay
Cordillera - Four school teachers in Mt.Province have to walk 9 kilometres and cross a river to find an internet signal to attend a webinar.

A group of public school teachers from Maducayan Elementary School in Natunin Mt. Province needed to upgrade their computer skills for the upcoming school year by attending a webinar on blended learning, but  have to walk several kilometres to reach Barangay Saliok, the nearest place where they can find an internet signal.

In an interview with GMA, the head teacher,  Julita Gumatay, said that it takes them about two  hours to reach  Barangay Saliok on foot during a good weather. However, it would take them longer on a bad weather condition as the paths are slippery.

Adjusting to the new social norm brought about by the pandemic, teachers are finding ways to fulfill their duties and responsibilities in bringing education to their students. They are ready to sacrifice their time and resources as a way of showing dedication to their profession.

"As we have pledged it, as a teacher, is to bring education to the children. Lalo na ngayon, COVID-time, talaga we are worried kung paano naman namin iaabot and edukasyon para sa nga bata,"  Gumatay said.

The teachers attended the webinar huddling together as they were using a single mobile phone and a speaker.

According to Gumatay, they have to go to a hill in the said barangay  to have a better internet signal. Despite using only one mobile phone as a remedy for a stronger signal, it's still been fluctuating because they were using a cellphone.

As resilient these teachers may be, Gumatay said that they are more worried about their students' lack of gadgets and the availability of internet signals.

"Paano kami gumamit ng internet or online na wala namang signal? Ang mga bata ay wala naman silang gadgets....they are still ignorant in using gadgets like this...," Gumatay added.

These teachers are ready and willing to do whatever it takes to bring education to the children. Just like other teachers and educators facing the same predicament, Gumatay's heartfelt request is to have a stronger cell site.

May these teachers' simple request for a stronger cell site or internet signal be granted and be considered an urgent need if schools will be implementing distance or blended learning as part of the new program in the education sector.

Cordillera - Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar has announced that the final segment of the 88.85 kilometer-Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) will be opened to motorists by July 15.

Secretary Villar said that the completion and opening of the 11-kilometer Pozorrubio, Pangasinan to Rosario, La Union Section was seen to drastically reduce travel time from Tarlac to Rosario by an hour from the current 3.5 hours.

"With the completion of the last portion of originally designed TPLEX towards Rosario Rotunda (formerly Pugo - Rosario Road / Manila Road Junction), travelling to the Ilocos Region and Baguio city in the Cordilleras will now be easy", added Secretary Villar.

From the Rosario rotunda, motorists bound to Baguio have three route options of taking Marcos Highway (go further to Pugo), Kennon Road, or the Asin - Nangalisan Road.

The 24-billion (4) lane toll road project implemented by DPWH involves the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance by the private sector.

San Miguel Corporation's Private Infra Dev Corporation holds the concession for TPLEX which is integrated with Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) and the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) connecting the central and northern Luzon provinces to Manila and beyond.
