DSWD Sec. Bautista admires the culture of Cordillera: "Hangga't kaya nila ay hindi sila nanghihingi"

Photo Courtesy || PIA-Cordillera
Cordillera - The secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Rolando Bautista has admired the culture of Cordillera people for not asking help from the government while they can still sustain themselves.
"Makikita talaga ang kultura ng Cordillera na hangga't kaya nila and hindi sila nanghihingi," Bautista said in a statement via PIA.

He said that there are 50 out of 77 local government units in Cordillera that had not submitted request to be part on the so called waitlisted or left out.

Bautista's statement is very true of the Cordillerans. Cordillerans have an inherent attitude to always prepare themselves for any extremely difficult situation and they don't complain

Here are 7 of the reasons why Cordillerans or Igorots could survive crisis without complaining as written by blogger Felisa Daskeo.

1. Resilience - Igorots are perhaps one of the most resilient people. They have strong personalities that help them recover easily during times of crisis. They have the ability to adapt to any situation.

2. They live within their means. - Igorots don't practice extravagant life. They live in a simple lifestyle like their ancestors and content themselves with what they have. They are not fond of jewelry and other luxuries that are only embellishment and unnecessary in their daily life. Just because Juan has a new television means Pedro will also buy one. It is not what they were taught. If you don't have extra money to buy "luho", then be contented with what you have.

3. They always think of others. - Igorots always think of others and are not selfish. They always think of the word, "Inayan sa." Greed of power and money is frowned upon by many Igorots.

4. They always save for the rainy day. - Igorots aren't one day millionaires. They always think of the future. Their "agamang" rice granary is always full. So the rice supply could sustain them for a year or more. Farmers plant rice in the rice terraces only once a year. So they make sure they have enough rice supply before harvest seasons comes again. Igorots are heavy rice eaters because they work very hard to sustain themselves. They aren't used to charities from other people unless needed. In times of crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic, rice and salt is almost a luxury.
5. They practice bayanihan religiously. Igorots practice bayanihan especially in times of calamities. The death of someone means every family in the community must share something to help the bereaved family. So the bereaved family will not be indebted, but they will have an extra budget for the pa-siyam and 40 days celebrations. They accomplish community projects in gratis, and you don't hear complaints. They do their duties and responsibilities for their community without complaining.

6. They respect the authorities and abide by the laws. Igorots may not be that courteous. They don't have po and opo in their words. They don't practice the "Mano po". They don't always say, ma'am and sir. But in respecting authorities and laws, they need not be told what to do. They abide the laws and follow orders from authorities. This Covid-19 pandemic alerted the Igorots to practice the "Tee" or "Tengaw" which is the Igorot version of "Stay-at-Home. Te-e or Tengaw is an old tradition and practice where everyone must stay at home during a certain event.. The Igorots observe Te-e or Tengaw 100%. They always listen to the old man.

7. They are very practical. This part will surely surprise you. In the Cordillera Region, you cannot tell who is rich and who is not because even the rich aren't so showy about what they have. They wear simple clothes, but they have a mansion and a handsome car. Igorots will buy a nice car which is necessary but an LV bag worth Php100,000. He will build a mansion but do not expect him to buy that Rolex watch that is worth half million pesos. In short, they are very practical and they buy only what is necessary. So when you see an Igorot that resembles that beggar in Luneta Part, do not smirk and say, "kadiri". For all you know that Igorot is a millionaire who is just killing time while waiting for his daughter who is a doctor in one of the hospital's around and mind you, he is driving a Land Rover.

These and more are some inherent characteristics of Igorots worth emulating that make them sustain themselves in times of calamities.

Canadian working in an airline wrote heartwarming message about the Igorots

Cordillera - After reading the uplifting comment of 'Becoming Filipino' vlogger by the name of 'Kulas' appreciating the toughness of the Igorots, a Canadian airliner worker Mr. Guy Beaulie couldn't help but share his heartwarming message to all Igorots.
In his message, he expressed his admiration to the wonderful Igorots who, despite the fact that they are sometimes being discriminated by outsiders, they are very hospitable and humble people.

Beaulie said that his 'Love, respect, and admiration' to the Igorots made him decide to build his house near Kabayan, Benguet.

Read his full message below:
"Hey Kulas. I could not have said it better myself. I'm Canadian just like you and I traveled the world as I work for an airline. After visiting the Philippines and particularly the Cordilleras region and meeting the Igorots there, I must agree 100% with you. These people work so incredibly hard under incredibly harsh condition and they get so little of their labor. Yes, they are discriminated against by some but also admired by others like you and me and many others. I have, like you, taken the time to talk with them, eat with them, listen to them and live with them in their humble house. I ate their food. Danced their dances. Laughed with them, listen to them and cried with them. Yes they are shy. But once they get to know you they will open their arms and give you everything they can to make you feel welcome just like the Chilean people who also are similar to them.
I love the Cordilleras region and I LOVE, RESPECT, AND LOVE and ADMIRE what they do. So of all places, I decided to build a house in Benguet, in Besang close to Kabayan. I love it there. I love the peaceful people there. The children are so different than the children in Canada. The children who walk through mud, trails, mountains, rivers for hours in the rain and sometimes typhoon to go to school and back. No bus to take them there. Only the flip flops on their feet. But this is what makes strong people. People with character. People with values. People who appreciate what they have because they work so freakin hard to get it. So I'll live with them when I retire. I'll love them more this way and try to help them feel loved and appreciated.
Thank you Kulas for all your blogs about the Philippines. Becoming Philippino is indeed becoming kind, polite, respectful and loving. I hope to meet you in person one day and invite you to my house in Besang and meet my family there. Some are farmers and some are teachers, nurses, doctors and engineers. Yes some of them pursued their studies at the university in Baguio and became professionals at a cost that seems impossible to understand. I cried then and still cry now when I think about the sacrifices these people made to get where they are today.
Filipinos, I can say with no hesitation, are the most polite and loving respectful and enduring people I have ever met. I decided to live with them because I love them and they love me. Keep doing what you are doing Kulas. I'll continue to watch you with them as you become Filipino, just like I am. God bless you. God bless the Philippines. God bless the Igorots.

Getting to know Igorot Roque Daligan Belino of "Idol Philippines"

Mt. Province- Roque Daligan Belino, a local talent of Besao and Tadian Mt. Province joins national singing competition in the local T.V. show, "Idol Philippines."
The 20-year old singer found his passion in music and the outpouring support from everyone especially his "kailyans" even those from abroad motivated him more to pursue his love in singing and join the national competition level.

The humble and young singer Belino was overwhelmed  to continually receive unexpected popularity when he joined Idol Philippines and personally witnessed the unending support that Igorots  generously offer to their fellows. It is indeed one of the traits that identify Igorots.

"Giving support, be it in kind, physical and moral is like a normal thing to us Igorots. It is like a reflex because we do it automatically whenever we see fellow Igorots excelling in their respective fields," Belino said via an interview by the Mountain Province Provincial Information Office.

Belino lived in Mt. Province for seven years then relocated to Quezon, Isabela with his family. Even so, he  was still attached to his roots as he lived in a community with friends and relatives who were mostly from Mt. Province just the same.

Growing up with a usual Igorot childhood, he was acculturated with the rich heritage and tradition like wearing the "wanes" by himself, playing and dancing with the beat of  "gangsa", and being raised with the moral values not to mention the principles of "lawa" and "inayan."

He discovered his passion for music earlier in his High School years while helping his fellow students play the bandoria. He then took Agricultural Engineering at Benguet State University in La Trinidad Benguet as a self-supporting student working as a miner.

He shared that he eventually stopped attending college to work full time but if given the chance, he wants to finish a degree.  He is a miner by day and play few gigs at night in Baguio City until opportunity stepped in through the competition.

According to Belino, he was inspired by the many Igorot talents he worked with and other musicians he saw playing around Baguio.

Witnessing such potentials and being a fan of many talented people from Cordillera, he also hopes that more of them will be discovered and be featured as well.

Belino wishes to extend his gratitude for the full support that he receives from everyone. He also encourage the youth to continue working hard and not give up in pursuing their dreams till making it a reality.

Apayao PMA graduates encourage fellow youth to follow their footsteps

Baguio City-  Recently commissioned  Arm Forces of the Philippines (AFP) officers from Apayao encourage their fellow youth to follow their footsteps and join the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

"Sa mga kabataan sa aking bayan ng Apayao, nauna na kami sa PMA, at sana kayo naman ang sumunod" Tugaoen said during an interview after the graduation ceremony.

Iapayao's pride Navy Ensign Mike Tugaoen from Luna and 2nd Lieutenant Dexter Tucrang from Kabugao  who are both members of the 261-strong PMA "MABALASIK" class of 2019 graduated on May 26 at the Fort Del Pilar.

Navy Ensign Mike Tugaoen
Tugaoen who hails from Turod Luna and will be joining the Philippine Navy had a simple life but with a dream to join the military. His ambition to become a peacekeeper of the country and to help alleviate the  living standard of his family are among his reasons to join the PMA.

"Pangarap ko talagang maging sundalo para makatulong sa bansa at syempre para matulungan ko din ang pamilya ko na umangat sa buhay," Tugaoen said.

His desire to become a soldier of the country's armed forces to defend the people and the country came about with the history of his hometown in Marag Valley which was once called "no man's land".  This was back in the 1970's when the New People's Army (NPA) took the Valley as their stronghold.

He decided to take the PMA entrance exams and passed while on his 3rd year in Criminology  at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) in Baguio City. After four years of Academic and training in the Academy, his dream to become a soldier, a junior military officer has been fulfilled.

Meanwhile, another Iapayao's pride Dexter Tucrang from Publacion, Kabugao also aspired to become a PMA cadet and soldier to ensure peace and order in the country. He was a graduating Engineering student at Saint Louis Tuguegarao back then when he entered the PMA in 2015.
2nd Lieutenant Dexter Tucrang

Tucrang was a scholar of the Provincial Government of Apayao under the programs initiated by Governor Elias Bulut, Jr. and Congressman Eleanor Begtang and eventually a scholar  at the PMA. Being a scholar made him study hard, exceed expectations and strive to graduate.

"Take the PMA challenge and enter the road less traveled; enter the noblest profession," Tucrang said as an encouragement to the younger generations of Apayao.

He already helped his parents and siblings in their daily lives by becoming a cadet which he would still do now that he became a fully pledged member of the AFP as 2nd Lieutenant of the Philippine Army.

"Super proud ako. Parang nanalo ako ng sweepstakes sa saya ko," Robert Tucrang cried while hugging his son, Dexter, at the graduation grounds.

For Tucrang, he fulfilled his father's dream of having one of his children graduate from the premiere military school in Asia.

Mayor-elect Bensmar Ligwang of Kabugao expressed his joy for having a  PMA cadet graduate hailing from their remote municipality.

"I am very happy we have the first PMA graduate from Kabugao and I even witnessed it personally at the PMA grounds. This  gives pride to our municipality and even to the province of Apayao and we will be giving recognition for this accomplishment," Ligwang said.

The provincial government of Apayao will be recognizing the two new graduates who gave pride to the Iapayaos and served as an inspiration to the youth.

Fearless and courageous young Igorota girl saves a child from an evil molester

Reposted from Cheryl L. Daytec-Yangot FB post

A few hours  ago, JM Madinno rode a jeepney from La Trinidad to Baguio. She noticed that an adult was molesting a child, a girl, who was leaning on him. Secretly, JM took a video recording. She and her friends went to Burnham Park and saw the same man with same child. His one arm was wrapped around the child whose attention was glued to a phone. Meanwhile, his other hand was moving on the child's privates. JM took pictures.

JM reported the matter to the police. She also uploaded on the Baguio Sumbungan Forum FB Group the video and pictures she took. Within hours, the child molester, a chess/damath coach, was apprehended by the police. The child is one of the kids he has been coaching.

If we all try to be JM OLSIM MADINNO who, even if very young, courageously made a stand against evil, we can make the world a safe place for our children and everyone. The government has interagency committees to end sexual exploitation of children. One challenge is how to get everyone to be a JM whose concern went beyond herself to an innocent stranger.

I have to further commend JM because she took extra care to protect the privacy of the girl-child by blurring the latter's face in the pictures.

Let us all try to be a JM. She embraces the pain of others as hers. She teachers us not lose hope in humanity. Hers should be the face of that humanity.

We apologize to JM for the public bashing she got. She should have reported the matter to the police, bashers say. Geez, she did that. JM should not have blurred the victim's face, so people could identify her, bashers say. Ha??

Thankfully, JM is cut above all of us. Even if herself a child, she knew exactly what to do. There were adults in that jeepney. Some of them must have seen what this girl of tender years saw and found not right. But who made a stand? Who stood up?

The police say JM was afraid and confused as to what to do about what she witnessed. But in the end, she rose above her fears and did what no adult in that jeepney she fortuitously took did. That is courage. It is not being fearless: it is rising above one's fear to do the right thing even at great peril to oneself.

He died a hero: Igor drowns while saving two boys and his girlfriend drifting out to sea of La Union

Photo Courtesy || Pearl Alvarez FB
Cordillera - A hero rescuer drowned as he saved two boys and his girlfriend who were carried away by strong waves in a local beach in La Union.

He was identified as Igor Sebio Donga-el, 29-year-old and a local resident of Pico La Trinidad, Benguet.

Donga-el, a member of Team Lakay died last night on a beach where the team had gone to celebrate their advance Christmas Party.

An eyewitness said that she saw her teammate signaling for help and all the others on the water waving their hands calling for help because three people were drifted out to sea.

"I looked closer to what was happening and was shocked to see three (2 boys, 1 lady) people going further and further away into the deep sea. I turned my back around, shouted for help along with others," Pearl Alvarez said on a Facebook post.

Many rescuers including residents and surfers nearby heeded to the call and came rushing to help.

Two boys and one lady (his girlfriend )were safely brought to the shore except Igor. His girlfriend went looking for him but she was told that only three of them made it to the shore. She didn't believe it because Igor was there carrying her, trying to make her float.

One of the boy said that Igor tried to keep him afloat by pushing his feet from under the sea and then disappeared.

When they can't find Igor, some good hearted residents rushed in the middle of the sea to check on him, according to Alvarez.

After several minutes of looking and waiting for Igor, the sea brought him back lifeless.

"Minutes turned into an hour and everyone was still waiting.. Minutes after the 1st hour from disappearance, we are witnessing a floating body on the sea, still on his blue shirt.. there goes the body of the HERO, tossed by the waters..The man who, until his last breath, with all his might, poured out everything he has to keep others from losing their lives," Alvarez wrote.

Igor was brought to the nearest hospital but he was not able to survived.

Watch: Banaue Rice Terraces featured in National Geographic YT Channel

Cordillera - The National Geographic YouTube Channel has featured the scenic Banaue Rice Terraces of the Cordillera Region.

Published on September 1, 2018, the video has now over 44,000 views and counting. The channel described Banaue Rice Terraces as a preserved cultural landscape that was passed down for 2,000 years.

Here is the additional description from National Geographic:

"A living cultural landscape is nestled into the remote slopes of the Cordillera mountain range in the Philippines. It serves as an example of sustainable agriculture with traditional techniques. For 2,000 years the mountains of Ifugao province have been cultivated with terraced fields that climb thousands of feet. These fields, and the knowledge to farm them, have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. They have long been central to the survival of the Ifugao peoples but they also occupy a central importance within their culture. Entire communities cooperate on seasonal systems of planting, pest control, and harvest. The coordinated efforts are tied to lunar cycles and sometimes accompanied with religious rituals. The UNESCO site encompasses five different clusters of rice terraces in the area. The Banaue Rice Terraces are the most famous of the lot. Banaue is approximately 230 miles north of Manila, and buses depart daily from the capital. It can take up to ten hours to make it up the mountainous terrain to the rice fields."

Photo Courtesy || Becoming Filipino FB

Cordillera - A triumphant and memorable journey from the south all the way to the north passing through seas and mountains, Kyle Jennerman or popularly known as 'Kulas' had successfully concluded his road adventure in Batanes using his motorcycle he named 'Cindy'.

When he arrived in Batanes, he was met by Rated K TV crew and conduct a short interview about his journey.

When asked about his top 5 most memorable places in the Philippines, Sagada and Kalinga are his top one choice. The reason - the views of Sagada and Kalinga are incredible.

"We literally drove from Manila up to Sagada and then Sagada to Kalinga. Sobrang malaki ang mountains, crazy roads but the views are incredible", Kulas said.

In his travel diary in his BecomingFilipino Facebook Page, he shared what he learned about the Apayao Province.

READ ALSO: Canadian vlogger "Kulas" admires the toughness of the Igorots and had a message to people discriminating them

"Driving trough Cagayan Valley, I realized I was near the Provincial Capital of Apayao. So, I decided to take a little detour. Even though I haven't explore the Province, it was great to learn a little and better understand just how big and diverse Luzon is! Did you know that Apayao is only 23 years old, and split from "Kaling-Apayao".

Yup, nestled away amongst  farmland on the foothills of massive mountains...Apayao's Provincial Capital kind of looks like a heart. Make sense! Because for the brief moments I spent there a lot of love was thrown at me...

MUST READ: Five reasons you must be proud as an IGOROT

Cordillera, - If you are starting to get the feeling of disliking your identity as an Igorot just because many outsiders or people from the lowlands use the term 'Igorot in a prejorative manner then, these five reasons will revive your spirit and help you love your identity as mighty dwellers of the majestic Cordilleran highlands.

Here are five reasons why you should be proud as an Igorot.

1. Our Ancestor were among the bravest of Filipinos.

The way our Igorot ancestors fought the Japanese invading army during World War II is a testament of  their bravery. Their gallantry and heroism were recognized by General MacArthur of the American Army prompting him to say these words:

"Many desperate acts of courage and heroism have fallen under my observation on many fields of battle in many parts of the world. I have seen forlorn hopes becomes realities. I have seen last-ditch stands, and innumerable act of personal heroism that defy description. But for sheer breathtaking and heart-stopping desperation, I have never know the equal of those Igorots riding the  tanks. Gentlemen, when you tell story, stand in tribute to those gallant Igorots. As members of the Philippines commonwealth, they have prove to be excellent fighting men." - published apparently in Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Chicago Tribune.

2. Igorots built the 8th Wonder of the World - The Rice Terraces of Cordillera

The terraces are located in the remote areas of Cordillera mountain in the northern Island of Luzon. They are the product of the ingenuity and high engineering knowledge and skills of the Ifugao ethnic group who occupied these mountains over 2,000 years ago.

The UNESCO has put these interesting remarks about the rice terraces. It says:

"The Ifugao Rice Terraces epitomize the absolute blending of the physical, socio-cultural, economic, religious, and political environment. Indeed, it is a living cultural landscape of unparalleled beauty. They are the priceless contribution of Philippine ancestors to humanity. Built 2000 years ago and passed on from generation to generation, the Ifugao Rice Terraces represent an enduring illustration of an ancient civilization that surpassed various challenges and setbacks posed by modernization." - Unesco.

3. The Igorots produce 80% of vegetables that supply the entire country.

Imagine the Philippines without Igorots who are tirelessly cultivating, planting and harvesting high quality vegetables that are the main ingredients of Filipino's favourite foods such as pancit, chopsuey, pinakbet, kalderata, bulalo, pizza and many more. Don't you know that your favourite french fries and burger at Max Restaurant are sourced out from vegetable farmers from Benguet?

The province of Benguet  holds the record of being the main source of vegetables that supplies the entire country. At least 80% of vegetables supplied to Filipino kitchens come from farmers in the highlands of Benguet.

4. Igorots are the best MMA fighters in the Philippines.

As proof of their ancestors being the "NO FEAR" men and women, Igorots today are known to be among the best MMA fighters in the Philippines.

If you try to google Filipino MMA figthers, the names of Igorot fighters such as Lightweight Champion Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario and many more  will definitely popped up. If you trace their roots, you will be amazed to know that these MMA warriors are Igorots from Cordillera.

Today, Eduard Folayang is regarded as a symbol of Phillipine Martial Art together with World Boxing Champion Manny Pacquaio.

5. Igorots are hardworking, intelligent, handsome/beautiful and  romantic.

The fact that we Igorots are not well represented or depicted in Philippine media and TV shows doesn't mean we are not what were describe above.

The being hardworking and intelligent aspect of an Igorot are clearly seen on how we turned the whole mountain into a rice terraces and vegetables terraces. You can't find any book about how to design a mountain into an incredible source of livelihood. You feel inspired and awed by the beauty of the transformation but behind those terraces is a hardworking and intelligent Igorot men and women.

For being handsome and beautiful. If we refer to the so called skin-deep beauty, there is an abundance and overflow of such qualities in Cordillera. In terms of beauty and handsomeness pleasing to the eye, we Igorots have those.

For being romantic. They say that Igorots are not romantic, well that depends on where we based our meaning of the word romantic. But we can say we are romantic in the sense that we value a certain ideal to a higher degree. Igorots value their love ones, family and friends more than anything else and we find romance by doing our best to show them we care by the best way possible.

We might not often give our girl flowers but we strive to fulfill our promise to love them forever. We might not be holding hands when walking but we see to it that we give them the best protection they need. We might not treat them dinner to a fancy restaurant, but we make sure they won't be hungry in our side.

There's a lot to say about the Igorots that we can't write on this blog. If you have some comments that you want to add, just write on the comment box below.
