Kind taxi driver in Baguio offers Free Ride on Christmas

Cordillera - A kind taxi driver in Baguio city had his unique way of giving gift to his passengers, he is offering Free Ride. 

On December 24, 2020, a passenger Mr. Dexmar Comesario has posted in his Facebook account a photo he took inside the taxi which says "Blessed Merry Christmas Enjoy Your Free Ride" written in a piece of white paper. 

Comesario wrote: "Naglalakad kami pababa ng Ambiong Road. Since walang jeep, hirap sumakay. Then habang naglalakad, pinara namin si Kuya. Nag-stop siya tapos mga five minutes siguro bago ko napansin yung nakadikit sa upoan na "Blessed Merry Christmas Enjoy Your Free Ride."

He then noticed that the taxi meter was not turned on. 

When they finally arrived at their destination, the taxi driver refused to receive their payment. 

Comesario thanked the driver for his little way of sharing and celebrating Christmas.

"Kudos sa'yo kuya for sharing and celebrating Christmas with others in your own way. Thank you very much," Comesario said.

Victory Liner soon to resume trips to Baguio City

Cordillera - Largest bus company Victory Liner has announced that it will resume trips going to Baguio and other destinations in Luzon after government officials in areas where they operate allowed them to resume their services. 

The company however, reminds passengers who are planning to travel to the summer capital of the Philippines to have their Certificate of a Negative Antigen swab test from origin terminal or bring a swab test result valid for 72 hours from departure. 

Passengers who don't have Swab test result can get them upon arriving in Baguio, according to Victory Liner. 

Another requirement for passenger is to have a Visata account where they can get a Visita pass that will be sent to their email. Click HERE to apply.

These requirements are to be checked at Victory Liner terminal in Baguio upon arriving. 

Baguio City mayor Magalong said the city will only allow eight buses a day to enter and leave Baguio once the trips resumed and further allow more if the health system for buses is working.

Other bus companies who are allowed to operate are Genesis, Philippine Rabbit and Rising Sun.

Cordillera - The Bamboo Eco-park in Baguio City is a perfect spot for nature lovers as it offers tranquility brought by different species of tall bamboo trees. 

The feeling of visiting the famous Sagano Bamboo Forest in Kyoto, Japan is only 30 minutes or so from the city center. 

The towering bamboo trees at the Bamboo Eco-park in Pacdal, Baguio are perfect backdrops for your Facebook and Instagram photos. 

Wooden paths are carefully put in place for visitors to walk in the middle of the thick bamboo trees.

The Bamboo Eco Park is now becoming a popular tourist destination in the city of pines. 

The park is located at the St. Francis Xavier Seminary at Liteng, Pacdal, Baguio City. You can reach the park by private cars, jeepney or taxi. 

If you wish to visit the place, the LGU of Pacdal reminds everyone to be mindful of not vandalizing the beautiful trees.

Modern PUVs set to ply Baguio City streets soon

Cordillera - Modern Public Utility Vehicles or PUVs will soon serve the riding public in Baguio City as the Cordillera Basic Sectors Transport Cooperative (CSBTC) has acquired 15 units of Euro 4 compliant vehicles. 

The new PUVs will take the routes Baguio Plaza - Aurora Hill and Baguio Plaza - Trancoville.

SLU remains among top performing medical schools in the country

Cordillera - The Saint Louis University (SLU) located in Baguio City was among the top performing medical schools in the country for the November 2020 Physician Licensure Examinations (PLE). 

SLU landed on the 9th spot in the top 10 performing schools in the whole country. 

The Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) released on Thursday the results for this month's PLE, wherein University of the Philippines (UP) Manila graduate as the topnotcher. 

Here are the full list of top 10 performing schools nationwide:

Cebu Institute of Medicine - 1st, 100 percent

University of the Philippines Manila - 2nd, 98.63 percent

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health - 3rd, 98.90 percent

LOOK: Baguio's Burnham Park Swan reached Cagayan to rescue flood victims

Cordillera - The Burnham Park Swan Boats has now been in operation to rescue flood victims in Cagayan at it reaches the province today (Nov. 19, 2020).

The owner of the famous tourist spot's swan boats, Mrs. Vivian Celso, offered to to give the boats to be used by authorities and the search and rescue operations to affected residents in Cagayan. 

Cagayan was suffering from mass flooding after Typhoon Ulysses struck the Philippines on November 11, 2020. 

The Swan boats are ideal for rescue because it can carry 10 persons at a time and the hull is made up of fiberglass which is not easily punctured compared to rubber boats. 

It can be recalled that Swan boats were also been deployed a decade ago in La Trinidad, Benguet to rescue residents stranded in their homes due to flood caused by Typhoon Peping. 

The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) and PRO-Cordillera brought the swan boats to Cagayan via Tabuk City in Kalinga. 

The Burnham Park's Swan boats are now on its way of rescuing flood victims in Cagayan.

Cordillera - The country's most elite flying school will be conducting a graduation ceremony this week.

Igorota beauty queen and Miss Earth Philippines 2020 gears up training for Miss Earth 2020

Cordillera - After her stint as Miss Earth Philippines 2020, Igorota pride Miss Roxanne Baeyens is now preparing for her training as she will represent the Philippines in the upcoming Miss Earth 2020. 

The 23-year old Igorota beauty queen traces her roots from Besao Mt.Province has always been passionate about nature and protecting the environment through various projects in her own.

In recent months she has became the poster girl of the Department of Agriculture - Cordillera in promoting urban gardening, highland agriculture and regreening.

In 2019, Baeyens represented the country in the Miss Tourism and Culture Universe pageant and finished 1st Runner-Up.

In a local radio interview, Baeyens admited she felt nervous competing in the international pageant because of pressure.

However, she said that she was very excited because this event is a 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity for her. 

This year's 20th edition of Miss Earth pageant will tackle environmental issues in the time of pandemic. 

It features the culture and landmark of every nation's candidate through talent, fitness and fashion. 

The grand coronation night for Miss Earth 2020 will be held on November 29, 2020.

Baguio makeup artist creates incredible illusion painting on her face.

Cordillera - A Baguio makeup artist is getting traction on social media after creating an incredible face makeup illusion. 

21-year old Goldie Geanne Allawan Yabes specializes in painting on canvas but she used her face as canvas instead.

Just recently, Yabes created a camouflage face painting that blends with the fields, mountains and skies of Dampre, Floridablanca in Pampanga.

On her Youtube channel, she documented the step by step process on how she did the camouflage face painting illusion.

"To started with this look, I used white poster paints for the outline. Next I mixed color white and blue to the match the color of the sky. The I painted green for the trees and mountain which has a darker color. And I also used color yellow paint for the fields," Yabes explained.

"Para mas madaling magmix ang color since mag aad nalang tayo ng green and white for the details, I used three layers of color yellow and green dito sa neck area since hindi gaano pigmented yung color ng yellow. I also used a little white para magpop yung pagkayellowish," she added.

SM Scholarship program online application to start January 1, 2021

Cordillera - SM Foundation (SMFI) announced the start of the online application period for the SM College Scholarship program for School Year 2021-2022 which will open on January 1 and end on February 28, 2021.The SM College Scholarship Program started from the vision of the late SM patriarch, Henry “Tatang” Sy, Sr. 

He believed that if you send one child from an economically challenged family to college, that child would have more opportunities to have gainful employment and later on uplift the economic status of his/her family.

The SM scholarship program is open to the following:

• Grade 12 public high school graduates from schools in the areas covered; or

• Grade 12 graduates from private schools in the areas covered (given that they have Department of Education (DepEd) voucher and finished Junior High from a public school)

- General Weighted Average grade of at least 88% or its equivalent for Grade 12 – 1st semester

- Total household income of at most P150,000 per year.

The program covers the following field of studies: Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, and Electronics), Education (Elementary and Secondary); Accountancy, and Financial Management, among others.

Cordillera - The first batch of Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) candidates has arrived in La Trinidad, Benguet on Thursday morning, October 15, 2020. 

As part of their pre-pageant photoshoot for the event, the candidates kicked-off their activities with a photo shoot showcasing some Benguet some of Benguet products including the best tasting strawberry of La Trinidad. 

The 21 MUP candidates also took photo shoot at Mount Costa garden located in Puguis, La Trinidad.

Before their scheduled activities, the candidates had undergone triage in Wangal. 

According to Philippine Information Agency, the candidates tested negative of the Corona virus before being allowed to travel and join the Miss Universe events in Cordillera.

Baguio and Benguet were confirmed earlier as the hosts of the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 until the coronation night set on October 25. 

The said MUP events in Cordillera was an initiative of Benguet caretaker and ACT Partylist Rep. Eric Go Yap as a way to promote the tourism industry of the province of Benguet.

Baguio is in a good place because of the people - Baguio mayor Magalong

Cordillera - "Baguio is in a good place because of its people", that was the statement of Baguio city mayor Benjie Magalong after the plan of opening  the city to tourists on September 22.

He emphasized that the local government of Baguio was able to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 because of the citizens who work  together with the government. 
"We were only able to manage the virus because Baguio residents worked with the government and supported measures we had set in place," Magalong said on Facebook post. 


The city is set to slowly test the waters of the new normal by reopening its tourism industry. 
"Covid-19 will never go away, hence we need to co-exist with it, we need to learn how to live with it, how to function with it and how to do business with it on our midst," Magalong said. 


On Friday (Sept. 19), Magalong was joined by National Action Plan Against Covid-19, Deputy Chief Implementer Sec. Vince Dizon. Presidential Spokesperson Sec. Harry Roque led the inspection of establishments along Session Road and the triage at the Baguio Convention Center before the city officially reopens to incoming tourists.


Magalong said that the decision to reopen the tourism industry was set because the people need jobs to sustain their lives and to prevent people from getting depressed due to the current pandemic.

Baguio high school student semifinalist of global science competition

Cordillera - A 17-year old, Jeff Winxin Collado, from Saint Louis University Laboratory High School has made his science video entry to the semifinal of the worldwide science video competition. 

Collado's video entry is among the 30 semifinalist from across the globe that is competing in the sixth annual Breakthrough Junior Challenge Competition. 

He will be competing against video creator from bigger countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Egypt, Korea, India, Indonesia, Italy, Morocco, Romania, the U.K and Venezuela. 

In his video, Collado talks about the Covid-19 pandemic and the process of Zoonosis - how virus transfer from animal to human. 

The video which gets the highest combined total number of Likes, Shares and positive reactions (Love, Haha, Wow) on the original post of the the video on the Breakthrough Facebook page will be named the Popular Vote Top Scorer. 

The top scorer will progress automatically to the final round of the competition, bypassing the the next round of judging and be placed in the final round of judging.

Comet NEOWISE spotted over Baguio City sky at 7:41 pm on 19 July 2020

Cordillera - The comet Neowise has for the first time become visible with the naked eye since the mid-1990s. 

The comet was spotted over Baguio city sky on July 19, 2020 at 7:41 PM, Philippine time. 

The NEOWISE (short for Near Earth Orbital Wide-field Infrared Survey) was discovered by NASA's orbiting satellite telescope. 

The comet can be seen with the naked eye but a pair of binoculars or low magnification of telescopes can give you a better view, according to Philippine Astronomical Society, Inc..

Comet NEOWISE is expected to come closer to Earth by July 22 hovering near the northern horizon.

Coca-cola's honesty cart - Are Baguio People Really Honest?

Cordillera - The people of Baguio are known to be honest. There are countless scenarios when  Baguio residents  returned valuable items they found to the owner.
However, does honesty among the people of Baguio city still prevail despite life struggles and crisis brought  about by the covid-19 pandemic?

Last month, the Coca-Cola company has launched the Wheels Project Honesty Cart which sells drinking water.

The carts were stationed in the Central Business District, at the Baguio City Hall and barangay Irisan.

The  aim of the project is to support marginalized individuals who lost their source of income due to the current pandemic as well as to promote honesty as a core value among the locals even in times of hardship.

No one was assigned to sell the item or collect payments so buyers can freely get the item and drop their payment in a separate box.

It was reported that there wasn't an under collection, rather the exact opposite from the items that were sold in the store carts, according to the Public Information Office - City of Baguio
The city Mayor, Benjamin Magalong was so proud of this report.

 "Looking at the audit report, there was even an overcollection. We can say that people of Baguio are amazingly honest. I m so proud, " he said. 

This project has once again proven that honesty has been the core value among the locals all along. This value has been passed from generation to generation that it already became part of everyone's lifestyle.

People of Baguio city and the Cordillera are "very disciplined" - Carlito Galvez

Cordillera - The chief implementer of the National Task Force against coronavirus, Mr. Carlito Galvez has attributed the discipline of the people of Baguio city and the Cordillera to the less spread of coronavirus in the region.

"For Baguio city and the Cordillera region, what we see here is the people are very disciplined unlike those from Manila which is the epicenter of the virus because it is hard to implement discipline to them," Galvez said in a statement.

Recently Galvez also praised  the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) for the good practice and effective method that was implemented to prevent the spread of the virus.

"For now I believe kayo and pinaka prepared or ever-prepared, nakikita ko ang CAR na model (For now, I believe you are the most prepared, I can see CAR as the model)," Galvez said during a meeting with the CDRRMC and several mayors in the region.

He also attributed the culture of unity and cooperation among the residents in the region as the uniting factor in preventing the virus.

Galvez said that he will inform the President of the Cordillera's good practices in managing the pandemic.

He also considered adopting the good practices in Baguio and the rest of  CAR as it has been evident that the region has recorded only few cases but with high clinical recovery rate of patients.

President Duterte praises Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong

Cordillera - Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has praised Mayor Benjamin Magalong for the job well done in dealing with the coronavirus threat in Baguio City. 

Duterte said Magalong is a "good administrator" during a televised public address on Friday (May 29, 2020). 

"Dito sa Pilipinas hindi tayo nagkulang ng ano... for example, Benjie sa Baguio (Here in the Philippines, we are not lacking of... for example Benjie of Baguio). He is a very good administrator.

Duterte said Magalong, a former police official, has the ability to craft a government in his jurisdiction. 

"Being a military man, he has that... I said, the... how to craft a government that is really fit for your... in your jurisdiction," he added.

Recently, Covid-19 National Task Force (NTF)Chief implementer has said he will report to the President about how the city of Baguio under the leadership of Magalong has effectively handle the coronavirus threat. 

Galvez also praised the Cordillera region for the good practice and effective method in preventing the spread of the virus.

Baguio City has shown a very efficient response to the pandemic where it recorded only 46 cases with only one death. 

The region has also recorded high clinical recovery rate of Covid-19 patients.
