No Dengvaxia vaccine recipient in Cordillera - DOH-CAR

Cordillera - Parents, students and concerned citizens in the Cordillera region has nothing to worry about the controversial Dengvaxia vaccine as the Department of Health Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR) said it has not conducted mass vaccination to children with Dengvaxia.

Dr. Alexie Marrero, DOH-CAR Medical Officer IV expressed confidence the region will not be faced with problems because it has not conduct mass vaccination among the students due to low incidence of dengue in the region.

The mass vaccination program by the Department of Health only qualifies those regions with the higher incidence of dengue, according to Dr. Marrero.

The Department of Health has created a task force to manage problems caused by the controversial Dengvaxia vaccines which recently been found out to be harmful if given to  those without a history of dengue.

On November 29, Sanofi Pasteur, the pharmaceutical company that manufacture the vaccines admitted that Dengvaxia is not recommended for people who have no prior dengue infection. Otherwise, they may develop more severe forms of dengue after the cycle of vaccines shots runs its course, according to PhilStar.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III yesterday said, they are demanding the refund of the P3.5 billion spent by the Philippine government for the purchase of Dengvaxia vaccine to be used to "cover the hospitalization and medical treatment for all children who might have severe dengue".

Duque III also said PhilHealth is ready to cover the expenses of any child who may have been hospitalized for severe dengue. Under PhilHealth's Medical Case Program, dengue case rate can cover up to P16,000 which includes hospitalization and doctor's fee.

"We will continue to be vigilant in monitoring our children for any adverse event following immunization and will strengthen the readiness of our public hospitals in attending to any severe dengue cases that my occur," Duque said.

RICO - Rice and Corn Mix: New nutritious staple food for Filipinos

RICO - Rice and Corn Mix Staple Food. Photo Credit || PhilMaize

(Featured Post) - The Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation said that at least six million Filipinos nationwide have been diagnosed to have diabetes - a major health problem among Filipinos that can result to other serious health problems like cardiovascular diseases, kidney damage and infections.

The foundation warned that the figure could double to twelve million by 2040 if  nothing can be done to stop the increasing prevalence of the illness.

To help combat this problem, the Department of Agriculture through the cooperation of both government and private sectors introduced a new staple food being developed as a healthy alternative to the plain white rice - this is called RICO or Rice and Corn Mix.

DA Sec Manny Piñol highlighted some of the benefits of eating RICO aside from helping the country not to depend on other countries for its food supply.

"With the increasing number of Filipinos afflicted with Diabetes, health conscious people have started looking at both the White and Yellow Corn as options ['because of its low Glycemic Index content and high in Beta Carotene']," Piñol wrote.

Research found out that too much rice in one's diet could led to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes thus medical practitioners recommend consuming staple food that has a lower Glycemic Index.

According to Piñol, the new product which is a mixture of Rice and Corn will be available for the public in major supermarkets like SM, Robinsons, Rustans, PureGold and others. It will be sold in 2-kilo packs in which buyers have the choice to select different RICO mixtures (100% Corn; 75% Corn-25% Rice Mixture; 50%-50% Rice-Cord Mix or 25% Rice-75% Corn.

" A Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Agriculture, the National Food Authority, the PhilMaize Foundation and representatives of supermarkets... Under the MoA, the DA will finance PhilMaize so it could produce RICO Staple while the NFA will help in marketing by offering it for sale through its outlets in Metro Manila and nearby areas," Piñol wrote.

Fil-am YouTuber Wil Dasovich tries famous Igorot bacon "ETAG" of Sagada

Wil Dasovich bites etag: Photo: Screen-grab | Abs Cbn
Cordillera,- Filipino-American vlogger Wil Dasovich visited Sagada and tried the famous Igorot native dish called "etag"  in the new released episode of Kuya Kim's Matanglawin show of Abs Cbn.

Dasovich has learned a lot of things in the making of etag, starting from the preparation of the meat, salting, smoking and of course the eating.

He also tries the etag pizza which is a modern twist of the etag as an additional toppings to the pizza.

"Etag" or "Innasin" to the kankanaey and "kinuday" to the Ibaloi is basically a salted pork or smoked bacon which is regarded as part of the Cordilleran culture of preserving meat food. It is initially prepared by salting the freshly sliced slab of pork and then curing it through either sun-drying or smoking.

Sun-drying and smoking require a minimum amount of time to achieve the desired texture of the etag, usually around three to four hours until the meat is fully dehydrated.

The method of preserving meat done by the Igorots is a unique way of storing meat food in order to last longer.

In the show, Dasovich also visited the hanging coffins, one of the top tourist destinations in Sagada and learn the way Igorot ancestor bury their dead.

Inscribed in the memorial walls are eight names of Cordilleran warriors who passed away serving their duty to protect the country. They are:

Cordillera - An ultimate display of heroism by an Igorot soldier fighting in Marawi has gone viral on social media after his story was posted by Josephine Jaron Codilla about his gallantry and heroism during an intense battle in the warn torn Marawi City.

The Igorot soldier is Captain Jeff Buada from Tuba, Benguet, a member of PMA Maragtas Class 2007 and currently assigned in the 15th Scout Ranger Company.

According to the post of Ms. Codilla, Captain Buada did what he think will save the lives of the hostages including the wounded soldiers.

"He literally put his life on the line to rescue hostages by removing his helmet, putting down his firearm and urging hard core terrorist face-to-face to free their hostages and allow the soldiers to bring the wounded to the hospital," Codilla wrote.

Captain Buada also "requested all the units behind him to cease fire, to put off the engines of tanks in order not to agitate the enemies, many of whom were in a state of war shock".

His action has resulted in the successful rescue of many women and children before the fighting resumed.

"To me, the ultimate act of gallantry and heroism was displayed yesterday by someone who deserves maybe even more than the Medal of Valor," Codilla added.

Meanwhile, the wife of Captain Buada cried when she learned the heroism done by his husband in Marawi and she was very proud of him as a soldier serving the country.
